Step into the winter backcountry and learn how to travel safely in snow-covered terrain! This 4 hour adventure introduces youth to snowshowing, avalanche awareness and winter survival basics in a fun, hands-on way.
Adventurers will have the opportunity to learn :
❄️ Understanding snowpack and avalanche safety zones
❄️ Using beacons, probes, and shovels in a mock rescue
❄️ Building a snow shelter and learning cold-weather survival skills
❄️ Team challenges to practice communication and decision-making in winter conditions

MEET YOUR GUIDES
Erica Yaeger, TRS, CTRS (Director of Operations)
Erica is a licensed Recreation Therapist with over a decade of experience working with youth in crisis. She has combined her clinical expertise with her love for the outdoors, teaching skiing, snowboarding, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, and more.
For the past five years, Erica has led countless backcountry trips with teens, helping them build confidence, resilience, and connection in remote wilderness settings. She joined Summit Journeys in early 2025 with a vision: to reach youth before they reach a point of crisis—empowering them to discover who they are and what they’re capable of through outdoor adventure.
In addition to her credentials as a therapist, Erica is a certified Wilderness First Responder, Swiftwater Rescue Technician and Avalache Trainining
SJ Ferrin (Camp and Program Manager)
Sarah (SJ) Ferrin graduated from Utah Valley University with a Bachelor of Science in Outdoor Recreation Management and has been passionate about the outdoors since childhood. From fishing, dirt biking, and small game hunting to camping under the stars, her lifelong connection to recreation has shaped both her career and her personal pursuits.Today, SJ’s favorite activities include snowboarding, rock climbing, and camping. She is a certified Wilderness First Responder, CPR provider, and Camp Mental Health facilitator, with previous certifications in Emergency Medical Response (EMR) and AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Safety. SJ brings a mix of experience, enthusiasm, and safety awareness to every adventure she helps create at Summit Journeys.

- Snow boots or sturdy winter hiking boots
- Waterproof gloves and hat
- Snow pants and winter jacket
- Base layers and extra socks
- Sunglasses or goggles
- Water bottle (we’ll have water to refill bottles)
- Food: Lunch, snacks, and warm drinks in a thermos
- Handwarmers
Summit Journeys will provide snowshoes and avalanche safety gear, including beacons, probes, and shovels.
